Local musicians eye French festival

The Choral and Music Society of Seychelles (CMSS) have said they are working hard so they can take part in one of several festivals in France next year.

Speaking to Seychelles Nation, society president David Andre said they have worked on a number of fundraising activities this year – and have not travelled at all – so as to be able to make it to one of the festivals.

“Our main aim is to promote music, good music in Seychelles, and to also lead our singers to take part in international festivals and other activities,” he said.

“We are aiming to take part in either a festival in Boulogne-sur-Mer or in one of several events in the south of France. This is one of our main projects, but due to financial constraints we will not be able to do both.

“We do get involved with local activities, such as taking part in religious festivities like the St Cecile celebrations and others for the Bible Society, and we have performed abroad in countries like France, Mauritius and Portugal.”

Mr Andre said one of his dreams is to revive the jazz festival in Seychelles and even find someone who can run a place here where fans of this type of music can come, relax and appreciate the music in a laid-back atmosphere, while he and other partners provide the music.

As part of the fundraising activities, the CMSS held a 60s, 70s and 80s night at the International Conference Centre recently, where music from those three decades was performed by Mr Andre and friends.

“A bit of jazz, blues, rock and roll, ballads, and even Creole songs were on for the night,” he said.

“We know there are people who enjoy these types of music, which was proved by the fact that tickets sold out and we performed to a full house.”
