Seychelles’ football loses a faithful servantAnthime Hoareau
Born: September, 1927
Died: July 27, 2009
SEYCHELLES’ football has lost one of its longest-serving and most faithful servants – Anthime Hoareau. He passed away on Monday.
He got involved with football in 1950 through Gustave de Commarmond, who brought him
copies of the rules of the game so he could learn to become a referee.
Mr Hoareau, who never played football, sat his refereeing exam on February 6, 1953 and received his referee’s certificate with a first class pass to become the first Seychellois international referee.
A former civil status officer, he held the posts of member and assistant secretary of the then Seychelles Football Association, which disbanded in 1981.
He was also the secretary of the disciplinary committee, and secretary and chairman of the referees’ committee.
On the existing Seychelles Football Federation, he was the first chairman of the referees’ commission before resigning for reason of ill-health.
In 1999, he was one of 10 recipients of the honorary awards given out by the then Ministry of Local Government, Youth and Sports to individuals for their valued contribution to the development of sports in Seychelles.
