Foreign journalists joined delegates to the first Seychelles Tuna Conference – including scientists businessmen and conservationists from the Indian Ocean and further afield – on the visit.

The tour was organised to showcase the success achieved in the tuna business here and allow the delegates to see for themselves the facilities in place at the Indian Ocean Tuna factory.

Guided by operations manager François Rossi, the group began their visit with a tour of the Spanish fishing boat Albatun Dos, which was unloading its catch.

After donning special outfits, the group followed the unloading, sorting and transport of the tuna from the boat to the factory’s cold storage area and then watched the various stages of preparation for canning and packaging before export.

The tuna conference, which started here yesterday with a technical meeting, will be officially opened today and carry on tomorrow.

The delegates will share their ideas and discuss how best to exploit the fishery while conserving stocks, under the theme: Taking stock, action today for sustainable tuna tomorrow.
