Cliff Moustache talks of theatre projects in Norway
Cliff Moustache,
a Seychellois
engaged in many
forms of art in
Norway where he
lives, was in his
home country over
the recent festive
season. In an interview
with ‘Regar’
he recounted his
experiences in 2009
and his plans for exploring
new grounds in 2010.
Cliff said that 2009 was a particularly successful year for himself and his company ‘Nordic Black Theatre’. During the year, he staged a modern version of William Shakespeare’s play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ with rap artists. Speaking of his motivation, he said he had wanted to do something different and not just another straight classic play. He wrote the new script together with two Norwegian rap artists and the production turned out to be a major success, especially among the younger generation who had always been wondering what theatre had for them. The production attracted the interest of the ‘Norwegian Philharmonic Orchestra’ which is now working with Nordic Black Theatre to stage the play in Oslo in March 2010.
Cliff is aiming for another challenge with the Oslo Opera House for 2010 with a play called ‘Guantanamo’ based on the prison in Cuba. If the plans turn out, the play will be staged before the Norwegian public in December 2010.
But Cliff also hopes to be doing something in Seychelles this year and has been in contact with the National Arts Council during his visit to explore ideas for a project here.
