New pavement enhances pedestrian safety
Pedestrians now feel more at ease using the stretch of road from the airport exit to the entrance of the cargo terminal now that a concrete footpath has been constructed and two new road signs placed.
The new pavement, an initiative of both the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) and the Seychelles Land Transport Agency (SLTA), started on October 10 and completed on December 13, 2011. It will help provide a safe and adequate footpath for pedestrians and employees around the airport who are frequent users of this stretch of road.
“The location had been experiencing pools of water after heavy rains and vehicles used to park by the roadside, making circulation from the airport to entrance of the cargo terminal difficult and unsafe for pedestrians and employees respectively,” said SCAA spokesperson Lina Laurence.
The authority fully supported the initiative by wholly funding the project amounting to R205,000 under its corporate social responsibility budget. The project was implemented and closely supervised by the SLTA.
Two road signs fully paid for by the SCAA at R3,672 have also been installed along the road leading to the airport, indicating the presence of an airport.
A second phase of the project will be undertaken this year, whereby the SCAA will work on the landscaping to beautify the area.
The SCAA and SLTA are satisfied with the prompt completion of the project and will continue to work hand in hand to ensure safety on the busy stretch of road.
