La Misere road suffers consequences

Huge pot hole on road La Misere road

The heavy trucks and machinery going up the La Misere road have begun to take a toll.

Numerous potholes have begun appearing at different points. The most remarkable is one near the bridge above Fairview, where a piece caved in on Tuesday. It was quickly filled in with coral fill but this subsided again quickly and was re-filled, this time with aggregate. It is in a potentially dangerous part because the road might collapse. The land transport division has barricaded it with barrels which at present is causing traffic congestion on that stretch.

This is only one of the effects of the volume of traffic that the road has to bear nowadays as a result of the construction at La Misere and at Cap Ternay. They are part of the factors that should be taken into consideration for development projects.

No Environmental Impact Assessment was carried for Sheikh Khalifa’s project at La Misere – only one of the ways in which planning laws were ignored. Ministers have proposed that social impact assessment studies will be carried out for projects of this sort in the future but this is evading the point.

If the EIA required under existing regulations had been undertaken, all consequences of the project could have been anticipated, including social factors.
