Local forces train on board visiting US ship
The Seychelles Coast Guard (SCG), Fire Brigade and other local forces have increased their skills in at-sea operations by taking part in training exercises on board a visiting American ship.

The frigate USS Nicholas hosted the local forces – including both the Victoria and airport fire services – for a visit, board, search and seizure exercise, which is aimed at ships not complying with orders received from the coast guard or other patrolling vessels.
They also took part in fire-fighting and damage control, as well as a training-of-trainers session in which they strengthened their professional skills.
The Nicholas arrived in the country on Monday with a crew of 185, including teams of maritime experts to provide training. Its visit, along with the High Speed Vessel Swift, is part of the Africa Partnership Station (APS) East’s programme.
The APS East is a cooperative that aims to unite international partners to enhance maritime safety and security throughout the African continent.
Local journalists were given a full tour of the two ships and saw all their features, including their defence systems, helicopter accommodation, medical quarters, fire-fighting equipment and even their barber shop.
The ships’ crews have also toured Mahe and taken part in community activities, such as helping to improve conditions at the St Elizabeth orphanage and playing basketball against a team from the SCG.
