Karl St Ange passes away

Karl St Ange, one of the most prominent residents of La Digue, passed away on Thursday May 7.

‘Ton Karl’, as he was affectionately known to many, was an agriculturalist and hotelier who turned to politics during the years leading up to Independence. He was first elected Chairman of the La Digue Local Board in 1955 and in 1967, as an SPUP candidate, won the ‘La Digue and Outlying Islands’ seat in the General Elections.

During the years of the one-party system, Mr. St Ange served in Albert René’s government as minister for Agriculture and then Health.

Retired from public life in the 1980’s ‘Ton Karl ’returned to the family property on La Digue where he passed away quietly this week. His family and friends will remember him as a jovial person but also passionate for the causes he believed in.
