Men outnumber women in Seychelles

Local figures show there are now more men than women in the country; and the gap is getting bigger every year.

Men have outnumbered women locally since 2006, when there were 41,725 females and 42,875 men.

Since then, although there has been a steady increase in the numbers for both sexes, there are more males than females living in Seychelles.

One of the main reasons for this is that more baby boys are born now than girls to local families.

In 2006 alone, there were 47 more boys born than girls – 757 males and 710 females.

Up to the first six months of this year, figures from the National Bureau of Statistics show that out of the 86,956 people living in Seychelles, 44,999 of them are male.

Figures since 2003 however show women live longer than men. During the first six months of 2008, there have been only 2,579 men aged 65 years and over compared to 4,277 of women of that same age group.
