Art students put on stunning show

Stunning sunsets in different shades of amber and one-of-a-kind costumes are but a few of the works Polytechnic students showcased in their annual exhibition held this week at the Alliance Française.

Everything from still life, greeting cards and batik work that the visual arts programme area students have produced this year could be seen in the exhibition.

Some of the works on show, such as those in the fashion design section, were also in the Fon Lanmal competition held during the Creole Festival.

The students have produced all of them this year for coursework or for special projects and competitions.

“This is an opportunity for the students to showcase their achievements to the public and also to encourage them to take up the practice of participating in the process of creating art,” said the head of the visual arts programme area, Benjamine Rose.

The exhibition was officially opened with a ceremony at the Alliance Française attended by the students themselves, their lecturers and well-known figures on the local art scene.

The director general for culture, Raymonde Onezime – who officially opened the exhibition – said the event “showcases quality work of young budding artists full of vitality and energy”.

Mrs Onezime also said such an event gives the young artists the chance to learn to become responsible entrepreneurs.

This is the second time the school has held such an exhibition and some of the artworks were for sale.
